What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse is an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading or violent behaviour, including sexual violence. In the majority of cases, it’s carried out by a partner or ex-partner, but can also be a family member or carer.

Examples of domestic abuse

Domestic abuse can include, but is not limited to:

  • Being hurt or physically harmed
  • Being shouted at, threatened, or made to feel scared
  • Being pressured into sex or unwanted touching
  • Having your money taken or tightly controlled
  • Being cut off from friends, family, or everyday choices

Abuse can take many forms, and if something doesn’t feel right it is okay to ask for help.
